The study titled “An Examination of the Lexical Item ‘Child’ in Dictionaries of the Ottoman Turkish Period” is a 12-month project led by Prof. Dr. Funda Toprak and carried out by a team consisting of researcher Dr. Ravza Kaygusuz and master’s student Beyzanur Kalelioğlu.
The core focus of the study is the lexicon of the term “child” in dictionaries from the Ottoman Turkish period, including Ahter-i Kebîr, Kâmûs-ı Türkî, Lehçe-i Osmânî, Lehçetü ’l-Lügat, Lügat-i Nâcî, Lügat-i Remzi, Müntahabât-ı Lügât-i Osmâniyye, and Burhân-ı Katı. In this context, the concept of “child” will be systematically evaluated from various perspectives, including its definition, developmental stages, physical and character traits, and its social, familial, and cultural implications.
The aim is for the findings to contribute to elucidating the perception of children in Ottoman society and to serve as an academic resource of sufficient quality to be published as a book in the future.
