AYBU FBE ENERGY SYSTEMS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT DOCTORAL PROFICIENCY EXAM PRINCIPLES

I. FUNDAMENTALS

(1) The proficiency exam is the measurement of whether the student who completes his courses, other learning activities and seminars has the depth of scientific research related to the basic topics and concepts in his field and doctoral work.

(2) A student takes a proficiency exam at most twice a year.

(3) A student enrolled in a doctoral program must take courses for at least two semesters in order to proceed to the Proficiency stage. However, if students count the courses they have taken in lateral transfer, special student and doctorate programs, they are not required to take courses for at least two semesters.

(4) Every student admitted to the doctoral program with a master's degree must take the proficiency exam by the end of the fifth semester at the latest, and every student admitted to the doctoral program with a four-year undergraduate degree must take the proficiency exam by the end of the seventh semester at the latest.

(5) Ph.D. Qualifying exams are held once every semester, within the periods specified in the academic calendar. The student who has reached the proficiency stage and will take the proficiency exam must select the proficiency stage from the course registration system in the period he will take the exam. The student who is not successful in the proficiency exam takes the exam again in the next semester.

(6) The proficiency exams are organized and administered by the five-person doctoral proficiency committee, which is recommended by the institute's department head and approved by the institute's board of directors. The mandate of the committee is three years. The committee establishes exam juries to prepare, administer and evaluate exams in different fields. The examination jury consists of five principal faculty members, one of whom is a consultant and at least two from outside the institution, and two substitute faculty members, one from the same department/science and the other from outside the institution.

(7) The doctoral qualifying exam is given in two parts, written and oral. Written and oral exams are evaluated out of 100 points. Students who score at least 70 points in the written exam are taken to the oral exam.

(8) Exam juries evaluate the success of the student in the written and oral exams and decide with absolute majority whether the student is successful or unsuccessful. This decision is notified to the institute by the head of the institute within three days following the proficiency exam.

(9) Students who fail the proficiency exam are taken to the exam again in the next semester from the department/departments they failed. The student who also fails in this exam is dismissed from the doctoral program.

(10) Students who do not take the proficiency exam despite fulfilling the conditions at any stage of the doctoral qualifying exam are deemed to have used their rights and failed at that stage.

(11) The proficiency exam jury may require a student who has passed the proficiency exam to take extra courses/courses, provided that it does not exceed one third of the total credit amount, even if he/she has completed the course load. The student has to succeed in the courses to be determined by the decision of the relevant institute. These courses are evaluated as pass/fail and are not included in the GPA.

(12) A student who has been accepted to a doctoral program with a bachelor's degree and has successfully completed at least seven courses can transfer to a master's program by horizontal transfer, according to the student admission requirements.

II. APPLICATION AND EXAM APPLICATION PROCESS

This decision is reported to the relevant Institute within three (3) days following the proficiency exam by the Head of the Department.

8. The student who fails the proficiency exam is taken to the exam again in the next semester from the department/departments he failed. The student who fails in this exam is dismissed from the doctoral program.

9. Students who do not take the proficiency exam despite fulfilling the conditions at any stage of the doctoral qualifying exam are deemed to have used their rights and failed at that stage.

10. A student has the right to take the Ph.D. qualifying exam at most 2 (two) times.

III. PRACTICE PRINCIPLES OF THE WRITTEN EXAM

Written exam questions; It is formed by considering five (5) different topics to be selected by the student advisor and the exam jury from the topics listed below. There is a maximum of 10 questions in the written exam, with at least one question from each subject.

Elective Subjects:

1. Engineering Mathematics (ENGR 201 and ENGR 202)

2. Thermodynamics (ESE 203, ESE 204 or ESE 555))

3. Heat Transfer (ESE 305 or ESE 557)

4. Fluid Mechanics (ESE 301)

5. Solar Energy Systems and Design (ESE 310)

6. Energy Storage Systems (ESE 320)

7. Power Systems/Electronics (ESE 423 or ESE 519)

8. General Topics on Energy Systems Engineering

9. General Topics on Renewable Energy Systems

10. General Topics on Energy Efficient Systems

Exam duration is not less than 120 minutes, but maximum 240 minutes. The use of lecture notes is not allowed in the written exam. The exam date is determined by the "Doctoral Qualification Committee of the Department" and is announced on the Institute's website.

3. The research paper is based on the scientific analysis of an international article (effect coefficient >4) published in qualified journals related to the department.

4. The article subject to the research paper (number of pages; between 8 and 10 in double columns, between 16 and 20 in single columns) is determined by the student advisor and the examination jury with the agreement.

5. The article that is the subject of the research paper (or access information to the article) is notified to the student by the student advisor at least fifteen (15) days before the oral exam date.

7.2. In the first part of the presentation, the current framework of the article (purpose, place in the literature and any difference, material-method used, results obtained, findings and results) will be explained in a way that does not exceed 20 (twenty) minutes in line with the student's own ability to summarize.

7.3. In the second part of the presentation, the issues related to the detailed analysis, criticism and discussion of the article by the student will be explained. In this context; a) Positive or negative criticisms will be made for the purpose/target of the article. b) The student will explain their own ideas about their contributions to the relevant field and/or technology. c) Positive or negative criticism will be made on the material and method used by the article. d) Extensive criticism will be made regarding the suitability of the results obtained in the article. e) The student will carefully examine the references used in the article and make criticisms and evaluations within the framework of the necessity or suitability of referring to these references. f) The student will make evaluations on how to increase the quality of the article he has examined or what future research should be planned for the issues he deems deficient.

V. PRINCIPLES OF THE EXAM RESULT AND ANNOUNCEMENT

Exam juries evaluate the success of the student in the written and oral exams and decide with absolute majority whether the student is successful or unsuccessful. The members of the jury who voted for the student to be deemed unsuccessful add their negative opinions to the appendix to the minutes.
