Energy Systems Engineering graduate studies program

Energy Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary engineering branch that performs the design, analysis, and production of all kinds of energy systems by applying the principles of chemistry, physics, optics, mechanical/electrical engineering and materials science. It is one of the oldest branch of engineering with broad applications. In the department of Energy Systems Engineering at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, research is conducted in the following areas:

  • Renewable/green energy systems and technologies solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, green hydrogen, hybrid technologies,
  • Energy efficiency, storage, economy and management buildings, industry, mobility/transport, electricity grids, distributed grids, virtual grids,
  • Nuclear energy, energy generation, nuclear fuels, nuclear reactions,
  • Conventional energy systems thermal power plants, system optimization, hybrid fuels and systems,

The objective of the graduate program is to train individuals by aiming to specialize them in the following fields:

  • Teaching state of the art theoretical knowledge,
  • Developing practical skills through experiments,
  • Effectively using commercial engineering software,
  • Being able to analyze and interpret theoretical, experimental and numerical results.

The program accepts applications from candidates who have undergraduated/graduated from the following majors:

  • Energy Systems Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electrical Electronics Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Energy Engineering

Admission Requirements

Official admission requirements are announced before each admission period on the website of the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. The requirements listed here are for information only:

  • Required BSc GPA: 2.5/4.00
  • Required MSc GPA: 3.00/4.00
  • Required ALES score for MSc program: 70
  • Required ALES score for PhD program: 75
  • Required foreign language (English) score (KPDS/ÜDS/YDS) for MSc program: 60
  • Required foreign language (English) score (KPDS/ÜDS/YDS) for PhD program: 70
  • Candidates who do not have scores of accepted English language exam results must take the University’s “Foreign Language Proficiency Exam” in order to be exempt of the English preparation class.
  • Application letter

Candidates should follow call for graduate programs to be announced on aybu.edu.tr/fbe to apply to the programs. Students are generally accepted once a year for Fall term, rarely twice a year for both Fall and Spring terms.

Course enrollment

Students of both programs (Master's and Doctorate) must enroll to 7 courses in addition to FBE900 Research Methods and Ethics course to graduate. It is mandatory to take the Advanced Engineering Mathematics course or a course with a similar content. Doctoral students who have taken this course during their master's studies (the course must be taken and passed in less than five years ago as of the end of the semester in which the relevant course has been taken) will be exempted from this course. In case the Advanced Engineering Mathematics course is taken, it will be included in the 7 courses that must be enrolled. Students who are exempt from this course must take a total of 7 courses. Master's students should also take the Seminar course during the last semester they are completing their coursework. These students must submit their master's thesis proposal to the institute during the following semester until in the period which will be announced by the Institute. Students of both doctorate and master's programs must take the Special Studies course each semester. They should also take the Master's Thesis course or the PhD Dissertation course until graduation after they have started their thesis works.

Students should decide together with their supervisors on the courses which will be taken and do their enrollment by logging in at obs.aybu.edu.tr within the periods specified in the academic calendar.
